Trauma

358064723Trauma is not always temporary.

Traumatic events experienced can vary from person to person. These events include childhood or sexual abuse, a life-threatening experience, war, seeing someone lose their life, sudden illness, or numerous other distressing experiences.

The effects of trauma can look different for each person. Although there is a tendency to downplay the traumatic experience, the trauma results are real. They can keep a person stuck in a never-ending emotional and physical cycle of upheaval.

Some can experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), resulting in being on constant guard for the event to occur again. Trauma can negatively influence relationships, cause self-medication with substances to relieve the pain or become emotionally detached.

Trauma can cause us to feel stuck in life, making it difficult to overcome the memory or negative belief in our head or causing us to feel out of control of our body and emotions.

Overcoming trauma is possible with therapy.

Unfortunately, we cannot always control what happens to us, but we have a say in moving forward. Going to therapy can be the first step to feeling “unstuck.”

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one approach to treating clients with trauma. This method helps clients focus on the traumatic event and then reprocess that event into something less threatening. As a result, experiences that trigger a memory of that traumatic event become less threatening as the individual learns to put that memory in the past.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is beneficial for helping children. This therapy emphasizes gaining stability as the client processes that trauma.

Psychodynamic therapy is also helpful for helping clients become more insightful about their emotions.
